Follow Your Dream, Day #419: Carrickfergus

Raise your hand if Anne Buckley's performance of Carrickfergus during Feet of Flames brought tears to your eyes.

The first two iterations of Lord of the Dance used classic traditional Irish songs with new arrangements; in these early iterations of the show, the vocalist plays Erin the Goddess, a "Mother Earth" figure who foreshadows through song. For a show that's so radical with Irish dancing, the choice of traditional songs helps root the show firmly in its Planet Ireland setting; within the context of Planet Ireland being the Little Spirit's dream, Erin is the voice of the land itself.

When we polled you last year about your favorite songs from all the various iterations of the show, Carrickfergus was by far the winner. Something about *this* song -- its arrangement, its placement as the final song in Feet of Flames, the astonishing vocal performance by Anne Buckley -- just speaks to everyone.

So for today's journal entry, there are no tricks, no fancy edits: just the power of that amazing moment, captured in Hyde Park in 1998.

Planet Ireland arises: 2021.
