Follow Your Dream, Day #469: Happy Birthday, Erin-Kate Mcilravey!

People of the internet: please join us in wish #LordOfTheDance lead dancer Erin-Kate Mcilravey a happy birthday today!

Erin-Kate (also known amongst Team Lord as "E.K.") is absolutely superlative as Saoirse. The role of the "good girl" is incredibly difficult to portray, simply because how do you define it? How do you make it your own? There is far more to the character of Saoirse than just being the love interest for the show's protagonist; any dancer portraying Saoirse has to epitomize grace and beauty, but there also has to be fire and steel under the surface as well. Remember, in the first act, she goes toe-to-toe with Morrighan and literally drives her off the stage. Later, in the second act, she once *again* confronts Morrighan and wins.

Erin-Kate possesses all the right qualities to portray Saoirse: the regal poise, the authority, and also the grace, beauty, and sweetness. Of particular note, she is the first Irish dancer to wear trousers as Saoirse; it's a subtle effect, but it does make a huge difference onstage as to how the audience perceives her.

When you're in E.K.'s presence, you get the overwhelming sense that she was born to be a star; at the same time, however, she's incredibly personable and friendly. Like everyone else in Team Lord, she's down to Earth as one of the team, which is why we've put together this brief highlight video showing her both backstage and onstage. Touring with Lord of the Dance is an insane amount of fun; these are the greatest #IrishDance pros in the world, who work hard and play harder. By the time you see them onstage, they've already been rehearsing and warming up for several hours. When it's time to hit the stage, the magic of Planet Ireland comes to life right in front of your eyes; and when the show is done, it's back to the adventure and camaraderie of a group of hardworking young professionals who put in the blood, sweat, and tears -- and made it to the top.

Planet Ireland arises: 2021.
